I've been making these for years and finally added a @genuine_metalworks magnetic squaring arm. It works stellar on the edge of the die. I can flip it side to side after the first bend, and keep the arm on the straight cut edge and have no interference from the tread. HRPO always looks so good formed up. Our friends over at T.D.O.T. smacked something imm Our friends over at T.D.O.T. smacked something immovable with this plow truck and managed to mangle a C10x25lb channel. Knocked the bracket right off the front of it, which is highly expected, because it's downhand short circuit that seemed to lack all the property's that make a weld a weld. Anyway, reclaimed all the parts we could reuse and fabbed up a new bumper for the truck. Gotta applaud the state for that financially responsible decision, because the new bumper components were going to be $10K, a 14 week lead time, and the same hot steamy pile of garbage was going to be delivered. We even welded all the way around the brackets... novel idea, I know. Demo'd a boiler in the basement of a house this we Demo'd a boiler in the basement of a house this week in Sequoyah Hills. Built and installed in 1954, and the craftsmanship was flawless. Very well made with some great welding all over it. Would love to be able to see the fabrication process from that post War Era compared to how we build now. Pretty fun to carelessly rip and wreck steel apart when most of your work is hyper detail oriented. Carrying it up the stairs and outside sucked though. Also, don't know why we ever got away from lead paint and asbestos, the stuff lasts forever 😂😂 #fabrication #demolition #weld #industrialathletes #build #destroy #PPE

We finished slapping them on as @funkweld rolled into town to start the sandblasting. The move to the Zoo went smooth, and it's up on 4 beam horses we made. Watched real close as my good friend @genuine_metalworks was posting about restoring this Dake, and when he decided to sell it, I raised my hand as fast as I could. This '86 bullnose has been a project of mine since This '86 bullnose has been a project of mine since 2005. I first rode in it in 1986 when my grandfather bought it brand new. XLT Lariat, all the bells and whistles like a tape deck and cruise control 😂😂. Even had AC. I asked him if I could have it one day when I was 8 years old and he said "probably" and never brought it back up. He called me two years before he passed away and said it was time for me to come get. Had 66,000 miles and hadn't been started but a couple times in 5 years. Couldn't leave well enough alone and had to make it stronger and more workable than he needed it to be. Pulled the 8.8 rear end and went with a Dana 70. Solid axle swapped the front end for a high pinion Dana 44. Pulled the AOD crappbox auto and put in a ZF 5 speed, all on nickels and dimes, and dreamed of a repower one day. Spent all last year chipping away at it as time allowed. Saturday nights til 2 in the morning like we used to work in our early 20's. The easiest swap was to keep it a small block, so it got a 351 Windsor out of a crate freshened up to a mild 300HP. A long way from today's standards but a giant leap from a tired 302 with antiquated fuel injection. Gathered all the later model brackets to swap to a serpentine belt, stripped all the fuel injection wiring and other nonsense, and kept it as simple as possible. Headers with a Brawler carb. Modified a Mustang alternator to fit and almost doubled the amperage output. Re did the fuel lines and went back to a mechanical fuel pump. New clutch and some other stuff and it's finally back on the road and working like a rented mine mule. Stainless exhaust and some aftermarket engine mounts. Pretty rewarding to pull a tired engine that had never been out of its cradle and give it back something better. I think a winch bumper is next with high steer and a flat top knuckle I scored a couple years ago. Play the long game. #bullnoseFord #industrialathlete

The last 3500lbs installed with the butt bars in, The last 3500lbs installed with the butt bars in, lifting lugs welded on, and the 12' entrance and exit doors hung. It gets craned out of here on Monday to be set up for sandblasting and painting. We started talking to the Zoo about this project in the Fall of 2022. Wrapping it up feels pretty awesome, and it's a special thing to be a part of. So many talented people were involved in the planning and execution of this crate, and to be entrusted as the builder means the world to us. Also very thankful to have a small team of folks to fabricate this with, always trying to hold ourselves to the highest standard we can currently see. Always looking for ways to get better, and never settling for good enough. We hustled this week, trying to land the plane on We hustled this week, trying to land the plane on the crate and got a mountain of punch list items knocked out. Installed the sliding doors where the keepers will attach the foot constraints and got all the door latch/lock mechanisms in place. Every welding process we're capable of has been utilized on this build. So rewarding. Got a great material recommendation by my dudes @the.shop.incorporated and @arenjenkins who are far more material diverse than myself. Wrapped the doors in slippery UHMW channels and the doors, while still heavy, have no friction adding to their function. Really stoked with the way they came out. I initially thought they might need grease, but I think they are great the way they are if the tracks can stay clear of debris. Counterbored the channel in the mill and used a roundover to roll the edge to make it match the channels we made in the last post from 3" square tube. Attached it with rivets. The pins are all 1" cold roll that @bull_fab whipped out while I burned out all the 3/8" plate mounts. Drilled 7/16" holes to drop a padlock in so the door can be locked. Hopefully a few more rods on the 8 lifting lugs next week and she'll be ready to fly. Was making some poor man's channel yesterday and d Was making some poor man's channel yesterday and decided to run water through the tube to keep it as cool as possible and see if it could minimize warpage and dross cleanup. Turns out, all the dross coagulated into strips and looked a lot like dual shield slag. Thought it was neat, and the channels turned out pretty nice. Left a half inch connected on both ends of both sides, let it cool, and split em. Very workable. #scienceandstuff

(4) 12' doors almost done for the entrance and exit with the same pin and bronze setup the smaller doors have. We bored 1.75" holes through the 2x3x1/4 rec tubes to completely grab the hinge for a beefy setup. Couple more things to design and fab and it should be buttoned up early next week. Want to give a big thanks to several clients waiting patiently for us to have labor resources freed up (and a few that are pissed 😂😂). I knew this was a big project for us, and it's been helpful to have clients that understand the importance of this crate and my desire to build it. Being a part of relocating the biggest land mammal in North America has been a bucket list item with a big check mark beside it. We've got projects stacking up for January and February, so it's doubtful we'll get to back off the throttle any time soon. Very thankful as this year comes to a close to have the customer base and business culture we have to keep making this work. The prints on the elephant crate called for 1" pip The prints on the elephant crate called for 1" pipe with 1" steel pins for the hinges, and that didn't sit well with us. They'd rust up in no time and make the function of the 22 doors aggravating. Other than containing Tonka securely, the keynote function of the crate is to be able to access him. We've been cranking out doors as fast as we can, ranging from 13" tall to 12 feet. We went 1.75"x3/16" DOM with bronze bushings pressed into them. The bottom of the knuckles have shoulder bushings, so there is no steel to steel contact when in motion. Had @bull_fab on the positioner all day knocking out pins with 1/4" tabs. The top 3/8" plate mounts get threaded for a retainer bolt. Post weld up we're using a 1.010" reamer to clearance the inside of the bronze with pretty awesome results on the 1" stainless pins. The doors all have to open 180° and so far they are effortless to open. We're designing stainless latch pins to go with them. Burned out little .080" tangs to shim enough clearance for easy door removal in the future. We're tacking flatbars across the mounts to keep them from moving during weld up, and this allows us to set two doors at once in a unit for efficiency.
